Just breathe: Cultivating an ecology of belonging through collaborative and concurrent art-making is a project that has emerged from a research-creative collaboration co-led by two Minor Praxis lab members: CJ Ha and NV Fawaz.
For more on their work, please visit: Axiology Clinic.
This collaborative project is a materials-based intervention in healthcare practice and training spaces as well as academic spaces that both participate in defining and rely upon specific ideas related to the terms 'health' and 'care'.
In Just Breathe, we are using familiar material items such as: hooded sweatshirts, business cards, and posters to invite and explore questions of value, integrity, and belonging in professionalized care settings.
Just Breathe Crafternoon Series - Intro to Relief Printmaking
We want to invite you to be part of a research study that is focused on thinking about belonging in general and in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (FRM). We invite you into a shared experience, where we will come together to make art, eat snacks, and spend time oriented around three quotes, which will serve as invitations to learn a little more about ourselves and each other.
The study is designed to be interventional, not in terms of a clinical intervention but as something that intervenes or interrupts the typical rhythms of our time in FRM. We hope it will offer participants moments of fun, grounding, connection, and meaning during a busy part of the semester.
For this project, we want to specifically centre the lived-experience of students, faculty, and staff in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta. We are inviting the participation of up to 14 people who are curious about the concept of belonging, who would like to spend some time learning (or deepening) a craft, and are moved or activated in some way by one or more of the following three quotes.
"Rather than bend disabled bodies and minds to meet the clock, crip time bends the clock to meet disabled bodies and minds." - Alison Kafer
"Knowledge emerges only through invention and reinvention, through the restless, impatient, continuing, hopeful inquiry human beings pursue in the world, with the world, and with each other." - Paulo Freire
"I believe in making contradictions productive, not in having to choose one side or the other side. As opposed to choosing either or, choosing both." - Angela Y Davis
